I am not sure if I would want to take ukicehockey - there is an annual competition called uk ice hockey and I think I might feel bad taking it, mind you that might boost my site hits though if I went for ukicehockey.com

would you recommend .com domains or something else?

Nothing wrong with .com, for the CS New Media site we have:
csnewmedia.co.uk
csnewmedia.com
csnewmedia.net
csnewmedia.biz
csnewmedia.org
csnewmedia.eu
csnewmedia.info

Short and sweet is usually a good idea for a domain .

Nominet usually take about 6-8 weeks to remove a domain - although thats only ever a rough guide .

Option 1 - keep a eye on it the domain and check for availability every day .

Option 2 - drop nominet a email saying you want to register the domain and request them to have a quick look to see if it can be released

NOTE: dont ask when the domain will be released as nominet wont tell you .

Best way is just to give them a polite nudge and then check it at least once a day .

A good choice I think, the shorter the better. They don't cost that much domains so you can always buy a few.
