I got a laptop when I was on holiday in the states, but I was wondering if there is anyway I can make it region free?

Any known/good software out there that can do this?

You'll need to find out the model number of the dvd drive, it will be in device manager

Then a quick search on google should find it

You're allowed to changed to region 4 times via device manager- might be worth just sticking it to two, unless you want to watch dvd's from around the world?

I have not done it for ages, but I used to used some software called DVD Genie.
This was a few years ago...

so if i just change it to region 2 in the device manager - I will be able to view my own DVD's and not need to worry about it. All but about 5 of my DVD's are region 2 anyway

If its not already region 2, you change to that (thats one change)
change to region 1 to watch one dvd (another change)
change back to region 2 (third change)

They soon eat up and doesnt matter if you remove it and put in another computer it will still remember the number of changes. You might be better off trying one of the forementioned programmes.

Yeah but Steven said most of his DVD's are region two, so he could just leave it at that, then use another DVD player for the rest!

Most of the time you can get around protections by using VLC:
http:www.videolan.org
it was developed by some french university students to read just about anything...

However it doesn't always get round Hardware restrictions like those applied to some drives (i.e. the new Matchita drives that equip most new Macs)

hope this helps.
