Hey folks

Im just wondering how to people here build up traffic for their sites?

Does anyone pay for advertising or is it all through link exchanges and/or word of mouth?

Since I started making websites Ive realised that making a website is fairly easy as theres a clear process to it & you can basically learn how in a book... however when it comes to getting people to goto my sites im at a loss, if it wasn't for Google and LiveSearch my site would be a cyber ghost town.

Ive made the site have a number of sections so it would appeal to the largest possible audience.

I actually only get about 30 unique visitors per day, I cant afford to pay for advertising and I dont want to just exchange links with a bunch of random sites. So what are my options?

Ive put the link in forum sig's and submitted to directories... anything other ideas?

you could do a couple of things.

You could write articles about a CMS you use, blogging software, an area you specialise in.
Write about a topic that's not covered much or is hard to understand.
Contribute to blog posts, forums posts or even articles online.
Maybe try and do some link swapping. For example you put a customers link on your site and they do it back.Check out site forums (http://www.sitepointforums.com/index.php?referrerid=14313). They have a huge audience and some very good articles on each aspect of creating a website. They have a Promotion Techniques (http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=2&referrerid=14313) forum which i think you will find interesting :)
