What are people's thoughts on Affiliate Programs? Do they work and are they worth the hassle?

I'm thinking about adding an affiliatescheme to our site.

I am an Amazon Affiliate, it takes less than 30 mins to set up and very little time to maintain. The amount of money you make depends really on the success of your site, and the relevance of what you are trying to sell.

Well I'm hoping to setup an affiliate scheme for my hosting site, as it should attract more customers. I'm just confused as to how many companies offer affiliate programs and which ones to go for?

Maybe I should just code my own?
